In the middle of the seventeenth century, the Western Ghats witnessed the meteoric rise of the Maratha kingdom under the visionary leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Asserting sovereignty against the regional Deccan sultanates of Bijapur and Golconda, as well as the formidable Mughal Empire, Shivaji sought to build a permanent realm rooted in local self-rule. Amidst these high-stakes military campaigns and state-building efforts, securing an heir to the newly established dynasty was a matter of paramount geopolitical importance.

On May 14, 1657, at the hilltop fortress of Purandar near Pune, Maharani Saibai, the chief consort of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, gave birth to a male child. The newborn prince was christened Sambhaji, named in memory of Shivaji's elder brother who had tragically died during a military campaign near Kanakagiri in Karnataka. The birth of a healthy male heir was celebrated across Maratha territories with royal salutes, political grants, and religious rituals led by the infant's grandmother, Rajmata Jijabai.

Purandar Fort, perched high above the surrounding countryside, was selected as a secure residence for Maharani Saibai during her pregnancy because of its strategic height and robust fortification. The birth occurred at a vital juncture when Shivaji was actively expanding his territorial domain across the Konkan coast and Northern Sahyadris. Establishing a lineage provided vital stability to the administration and reassured Maratha chieftains that the struggle for Swarajya possessed continuity.

However, the joyous occasion was soon shadowed by personal tragedy. Maharani Saibai’s health severely deteriorated shortly after childbirth, leaving her bedridden. As a result, the primary responsibility of raising young Sambhaji fell upon Rajmata Jijabai. Raised under Jijabai’s rigorous mentorship, Sambhaji received early education in classical literature, political administration, martial arts, and statecraft.

The birth of Sambhaji ensured the succession of the Maratha throne, laying the foundation for a successor who would later lead the realm through one of its most perilous chapters. Sambhaji’s upbringing in the rugged fortresses of the Sahyadri mountains deeply instilled in him the strategic mindset and warrior ethos necessary to confront imperial forces in his adult life. His birth marked the continuation of the Royal House of Bhonsle and shaped the future trajectory of South Asian history.

Why it matters

The birth of Sambhaji Maharaj secured the dynastic continuity of the fledgling Maratha kingdom. As the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji was raised from infancy to inherit both the political responsibilities and the military leadership required to defend Swarajya. His ascension would ultimately prove crucial in sustaining resistance against the full weight of the Mughal army during the late seventeenth century.

Interesting fact

Sambhaji was named after his uncle, Sambhaji Shahaji Bhosale, who was killed in action during an attack on Kanakagiri Fort in 1654.
