Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj: Life, Reign, and Resistance

Moment 2 of 55

Death of Maharani Saibai, mother of Sambhaji

September 5, 1659

Maharani Saibai was the first and principal wife of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, having married him in 1640 while both were young. Hailing from the prominent Nimbalkar family of Phaltan, Saibai brought political legitimacy and strong regional alliances to Shivaji's expanding state. Throughout her life as chief queen, she was regarded as a calm, wise, and unifying figure within the royal court, offering sound advice and unwavering emotional support to Shivaji during the tumultuous early years of Maratha state-building.

Following the birth of her son Sambhaji in May 1657 at Purandar Fort, Saibai’s health entered a grave and sustained decline. Her illness lingered for over two years despite the efforts of top royal physicians. On September 5, 1659, Maharani Saibai succumbed to her chronic afflictions at Rajgad Fort, the early capital of the Maratha kingdom. She died at a young age, leaving behind four children, including the two-year-old prince Sambhaji.

Saibai’s passing occurred at an intensely dangerous historical moment for the Maratha state. Adilshahi general Afzal Khan of Bijapur was marching toward the Sahyadri heartland with a massive army, intent on capturing Shivaji and destroying the Maratha realm. Confronted with an existential military crisis, Shivaji had to suppress his personal grief to command his forces, leaving the infant Sambhaji in the tender care of Rajmata Jijabai.

The immediate consequence of Saibai’s death was a profound personal loss for Shivaji Maharaj and a significant shift in the internal royal household dynamics. Rajmata Jijabai immediately took complete charge of rearing and educating the young Sambhaji. She ensured that the motherless prince received rigorous physical, diplomatic, and political training, preparing him early for the immense duties of statehood.

In the long term, the absence of his birth mother profoundly influenced Sambhaji’s childhood and court life. Saibai's tomb was built at Rajgad Fort, where it stands today as a memorial to the founding queen mother of the Maratha realm. Her legacy endured as a gentle, virtuous ruler whose memory was held in deep reverence by the Maratha state and subsequent generations.

Why it matters

The untimely death of Maharani Saibai left the two-year-old heir Sambhaji motherless at a critical juncture, shifting his upbringing entirely to his grandmother, Rajmata Jijabai. This personal tragedy occurred just weeks before Shivaji's decisive battle with Afzal Khan, testing the emotional resilience of the Maratha leadership while permanently shaping Sambhaji's formative political and personal environment.

Interesting fact

On her deathbed at Rajgad Fort, Saibai reportedly expressed deep anxiety for her toddler son Sambhaji, formally entrusting his upbringing to Jijabai just days before her passing.
