The coastal belt of Konkan, stretching along the Arabian Sea, held immense strategic and economic significance for the Maratha Empire. Control over this region guaranteed access to crucial sea trade routes, valuable maritime customs revenue, and strong naval bases needed to counter rival powers such as the Siddis of Janjira, the Portuguese in Goa, and the English at Bombay. Following the coronation of 1674, securing the Konkan frontier became a top military priority for the Maratha leadership.

In April 1675, eighteen-year-old Crown Prince Sambhaji was entrusted with independent military command over Maratha forces deployed in the Konkan region. Sambhaji spearheaded strategic offensives targeting hostile strongholds, including the crucial fortress of Ponda on the border of Portuguese Goa, as well as coastal sectors near Karwar and Ratnagiri. This assignment served as Sambhaji's first major trial as an operational commander overseeing combined land and coastal operations.

Sambhaji's military objectives required maneuvering through the dense rainforests, rugged hills, and tidal rivers characteristic of the Western Ghats and the Konkan coast. Working in coordination with senior Maratha commanders such as Commander-in-Chief Hambirrao Mohite and naval admiral Daryasarang Daulat Khan, Sambhaji orchestrated tactical movements that disrupted local Adilshahi supply lines and neutralized coastal garrisons aligned with rival European and African maritime powers.

The immediate outcome of these military operations was the successful expansion of Maratha control across Southern Konkan and the encirclement of strategic enemy outposts. Sambhaji's forces secured vital mountain passes leading down to the coast, constructed coastal fortification networks, and strengthened Maratha naval dominance along the Arabian Sea, significantly curtailing Siddi naval raids on Maratha civilian settlements.

Long-term, this successful campaign established Sambhaji's reputation as a capable military strategist and tactician. It earned him the respect of veteran Maratha generals and demonstrated his ability to coordinate complex joint infantry, cavalry, and naval operations. The experience gained in the Konkan campaigns proved vital when Sambhaji later defended the Maratha coast against the combined naval forces of the Portuguese and the Mughal fleet during his reign as Chhatrapati.

Why it matters

Sambhaji's leadership in the 1675 Konkan campaign demonstrated his strategic capabilities as an independent military commander. Winning these coastal battles consolidated Maratha territorial control along the Arabian Sea and reinforced the empire's naval defenses.

Interesting fact

During the Konkan campaign, Sambhaji utilized dynamic amphibious tactics, coordinating infantry assaults on hill forts with naval blockades executed by the Maratha fleet (*Gurabs* and *Galbats*).
