In September 1659, while the Maratha realm was bracing for an unprecedented existential crisis, a devastating personal tragedy struck Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at his capital fort of Rajgad. His chief wife and senior queen, Maharani Saibai Nimbalkar, passed away after a prolonged period of declining health. Saibai had been Shivaji's principal consort since their childhood marriage in 1640 at Lal Mahal in Pune, remaining his closest personal confidante, emotional anchor, and the mother of his eldest son and successor, Prince Sambhaji.
Saibai's health had deteriorated severely following the birth of Sambhaji in May 1657. In an era before modern medicine, she suffered from lingering postpartum complications and chronic illness for over two years. While Shivaji was constantly away from home leading military campaigns across the Ghats, annexing Konkan, and planning fort defenses, Saibai spent her final months bedridden at the hill fortress of Rajgad under the care of royal physicians and her mother-in-law, Rajmata Jijabai.
The timing of her death on September 5, 1659, could not have been more agonizing for Shivaji. At that very moment, a massive Bijapuri army commanded by the formidable general Afzal Khan was marching toward the Maratha heartland with the explicit mandate to destroy Shivaji's rebel state. Shivaji was deep in high-level strategic planning, preparing to move his headquarters from Rajgad to the impenetrable forests of Pratapgad to lure Afzal Khan into a mountain trap.
Despite his profound grief over losing his beloved queen and lifelong companion, Shivaji was forced to suppress his personal sorrow to address the imminent survival of Swarajya. Maharani Saibai was cremated at Rajgad Fort, where a modest Samadhi (tomb memorial) was erected in her honor. Her death left two-year-old Prince Sambhaji motherless, transferring his upbringing entirely into the hands of Rajmata Jijabai. Saibai's quiet dignity, devotion, and political grace left an enduring legacy in the royal household, remembered as the devoted queen mother of the Maratha Empire.
Why it matters
Maharani Saibai was Shivaji's chief queen, trusted companion, and mother of his heir Sambhaji. Her death at Rajgad Fort removed a central emotional support for Shivaji at the exact moment he was facing his greatest military crisis—the invasion of Afzal Khan. It profoundly shaped the royal household and left young Sambhaji to be raised directly by Jijabai.
Interesting fact
Maharani Saibai's memorial tomb (Samadhi) still stands today at Rajgad Fort near the Padmavati temple complex, overlooking the historic capital of early Maratha power.
