Shahaji Raje Bhonsle was a prominent 17th-century military commander, strategist, and kingmaker who served sequentially under the Nizam Shahi Sultanate of Ahmadnagar, the Mughal Empire, and the Adil Shahi Sultanate of Bijapur. As the father of Shivaji Maharaj, Shahaji laid the crucial groundwork for Maratha military dominance through his extensive jagirs (feudal land grants) in Pune, Supe, and later in the Karnatak region around Bangalore and Tanjore. Although political pragmatism and diplomatic hostage situations frequently kept Shahaji physically distant from Shivaji's budding independent state in the Western Ghats, Shahaji maintained a supportive relationship with his son, privately taking pride in Shivaji's bold challenge to Islamic sultanates and imperial hegemonies.
In early January 1664, Shahaji was residing in the Karnatak territories under Adil Shahi administration, where he governed key territories including Bangalore, Hoskote, and Kolar. On January 23, 1664, while on a royal hunting expedition near the village of Hodigere (in modern-day Davanagere district, Karnataka), Shahaji was involved in a fatal accident. While riding at high speed through rough terrain during a wild animal chase, his horse stumbled over dense roots or uneven ground, throwing Shahaji violently off his saddle. Shahaji suffered severe internal injuries and trauma from the heavy fall and passed away almost immediately before medical assistance could be rendered.
The news of Shahaji’s sudden death sent shockwaves through both Bijapur and the Maratha realm. Shivaji received the tragic news shortly after returning from his successful expedition against Surat. The loss of his father caused profound grief to Shivaji and his mother, Jijabai. Jijabai was deeply heartbroken and prepared to perform Sati (the self-immolation of a widow), but Shivaji passionately dissuaded her, emphasizing that her leadership, wisdom, and guidance were essential to the survival and future of Hindavi Swarajya. Shivaji performed the customary funeral rites and built a memorial Samadhi for his father at Hodigere.
Shahaji Raje’s death marked the end of an era in 17th-century Deccan politics. His extensive southern domains in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were inherited by his younger son, Ekoji I (Vyankoji), who later established the Maratha Dynasty of Thanjavur. For Shivaji, his father’s passing severed his indirect diplomatic buffer with the Bijapur Sultanate, compelling him to directly address succession claims in the south years later during his famous Southern Expedition (Dakshin Digvijay) in 1677. Shahaji’s legacy remained foundational: his military career established Maratha cavalry dominance and provided the initial territorial and financial nucleus from which Shivaji built the Maratha Empire.
Why it matters
Shahaji Raje’s sudden death removed one of the grand military figures of 17th-century Deccan geopolitics. As a master general and kingmaker, Shahaji provided the feudal foundation, military training, and diplomatic cover that enabled Shivaji’s early rise to power. His passing forced a political realignment across Southern India, eventually leading to the creation of the Tanjore Maratha kingdom under his younger son Ekoji I. Furthermore, Jijabai's decision to forego Sati upon Shivaji's emotional entreaty preserved her vital role as the ultimate moral guide and advisor during the crucial expansion phase of the Maratha state.
Interesting fact
Shivaji personally built a memorial structure (Samadhi) for his father at Hodigere, Karnataka, which still stands today surrounded by a black stone shrine and coconut groves.
