On May 14, 1656, inside the heavily fortified citadel of Purandar Fort, Maharani Saibai gave birth to a son, Sambhaji, the eldest child and heir-apparent of Shivaji Maharaj. The birth occurred at a moment of dramatic geopolitical transformation across the Deccan. Shivaji was rapidly expanding his sphere of influence, having recently captured Javli and Rairi, and consolidating his authority against both the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur and the encroaching forces of the Mughal Empire. The arrival of a healthy male heir brought immense joy to the Maratha court and secured the royal lineage of the fledgling kingdom.
However, tragedy struck the young prince's life early. Maharani Saibai, who had been a constant source of emotional support and administrative counsel to Shivaji, fell gravely ill and passed away in September 1659, when Sambhaji was barely two years old. Following his mother's tragic demise, the responsibility of raising and educating the young prince fell upon his formidable grandmother, Rajmata Jijabai. Under her stern yet nurturing guidance, Sambhaji was steeped in the values of Maratha Swarajya, classical statecraft, military strategy, literature, and religious traditions. He was tutored in multiple languages, including Marathi, Sanskrit, Persian, and Urdu, acquiring a scholar’s intellect alongside a warrior’s training.
Sambhaji’s early childhood was defined by high-stakes political intrigue. At just nine years old, following the Treaty of Purandar in 1665, he was sent as a high-ranking political hostage to the court of Mughal veteran Raja Jai Singh I and later accompanied his father on the famous, perilous journey to Agra in 1666 to meet Emperor Aurangzeb. These early experiences exposed the young prince to the vast scale and intricate power dynamics of the Mughal Empire, shaping his understanding of diplomacy and war.
The birth of Sambhaji marked the emergence of a key historic figure who would go on to succeed his father in 1680 as the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire. His subsequent reign was characterized by relentless resistance against Emperor Aurangzeb's full-scale invasion of the Deccan, preserving Maratha independence through nearly a decade of bitter warfare until his violent martyrdom in 1689.
Why it matters
Sambhaji's birth secured the succession of the Maratha royal line. As the second Chhatrapati, Sambhaji led the Marathas during an extremely critical decade (1680–1689), successfully holding off the full military power of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Aurangzeb and ensuring the survival of the Maratha state.
Interesting fact
Sambhaji was an accomplished scholar in addition to being a warrior; while still in his youth, he authored several Sanskrit literary works, including the political treatise 'Budhabhushanam'.
