Following the successful acquisition of Torna and Kondhana, Shivaji turned his sights toward Purandar Fort, a massive twin-fortress complex (comprising Purandar and Machindragad/Vajragad) located southeast of Pune. Purandar occupied an exceptionally command position atop a mountain ridge, acting as the primary military gateway into the southern Maval country. At the time, the fortress was garrisoned under the authority of Nilkanth Rao Naik Nimbalkar, a hereditary Brahmin commander who held the fort on behalf of the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur.

When Nilkanth Rao passed away, a bitter succession dispute broke out among his sons regarding the control of the fortress and its associated revenues. Rather than launching a direct assault against a heavily fortified citadel that could withstand years of siege, Shivaji recognized an opportunity to use diplomatic arbitration and tactical surprise. During the Diwali festival period in late 1647 and early 1648, Shivaji accepted an invitation from the brothers to act as a neutral mediator in their inheritance conflict.

Entering the fortress with a modest personal escort under the guise of festive visits and arbitration, Shivaji acted decisively once inside. He managed to disarm the internal guards and detain the disputing brothers without bloodshed. Shivaji then addressed the garrison troops, offering them attractive pay, military commissions, and guaranteed protection under his growing banner. Recognizing Shivaji's rising strength and generous terms, the entire garrison chose to switch allegiance to the Maratha cause, leaving Shivaji in complete command of Purandar.

The bloodless capture of Purandar was a masterclass in political maneuvering and psychological warfare. It deprived the Adilshahi court of a vital regional headquarters without damaging the fort's extensive fortifications or exhausting Maratha manpower. Purandar immediately became a central military stronghold for Shivaji, offering a secure treasury, administrative base, and refuge for his family during subsequent military campaigns against both Bijapur and the Mughal Empire.

Why it matters

The capture of Purandar Fort demonstrated Shivaji's political genius in resolving local succession disputes to expand his territory without firing a shot. By converting Bijapuri loyalists into Maratha defenders, he secured a major mountain stronghold that served as a core defensive pillar for the Maratha state.

Interesting fact

Shivaji secured the massive twin-fortress of Purandar without shedding blood or spending artillery ammunition, exploiting internal family rivalries during the Diwali festival.
