Conferment of the Title 'Mahatma'

Fri, 11 May 1888, 00:00:00

On May 11, 1888, a monumental public gathering took place at the Damodar Thackersey Hall in Mandvi, Bombay (now Mumbai), where the title 'Mahatma' (Great Soul) was formally conferred upon Jotirao Phule. The ceremony was organized by prominent social activists, labor pioneers, and members of the Satyashodhak Samaj (Society of Truth-Seekers) to celebrate Phule’s four decades of tireless work toward the annihilation of caste, empowerment of women, and education of the oppressed classes.

The honorific title was proposed by Vithalrao Krishnaji Vandekar, a respected social reformer and contemporary of Phule, and supported by textile labor pioneer Narayan Meghaji Lokhande. The event brought together thousands of workers, peasants, reformists, and leaders from subaltern communities across Maharashtra. Unlike titles conferred by the British Crown or orthodox religious institutions, 'Mahatma' was an honor bestowed directly by the public—the working-class masses whom Phule had served throughout his life.

During the event, speakers highlighted Phule’s groundbreaking accomplishments, including founding India’s first school for girls run by Indians in 1848, opening water tanks to Untouchables, founding the Satyashodhak Samaj in 1873, writing transformative texts like 'Gulamgiri' (Slavery) and 'Shetkarayacha Asud' (The Whipcord of the Cultivators), and fighting for workers' rights in Mumbai's textile mills alongside Lokhande.

When accepting the honor, Phule humbly emphasized that social reform was a continuous struggle that required structural transformation rather than personal adulation. The conferment of 'Mahatma' on Phule—occurring more than two decades before Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was given the same title—solidified his legacy as the chief architect of India's anti-caste revolution and social justice movement.

Why it matters

The bestowal of the title 'Mahatma' on Jotirao Phule was a historic grassroots recognition of his pioneering anti-caste crusade and feminist activism. Bestowed directly by the working-class people and subaltern communities rather than colonial or religious authorities, it recognized Phule as the premier intellectual and social reformer of 19th-century India, cementing his legacy as a spiritual and political guiding light for subsequent social justice movements led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Interesting fact

Jyotiba Phule was honored with the title 'Mahatma' in 1888, long before Mohandas K. Gandhi received the same honorific title in 1915.
