In late 1659, the Bijapur Sultanate dispatched veteran general Afzal Khan with a massive force to crush Chhatrapati Shivaji, who was rapidly expanding Maratha territory in the Western Ghats. The conflict carried personal weight; Afzal Khan had previously played a role in the death of Shivaji’s elder brother, Sambhaji. Maharani Saibai, Shivaji’s beloved first queen consort, had passed away just months earlier at Rajgad, adding poignant emotional gravity to this critical campaign.
Recognizing Afzal Khan’s tactical advantages on open ground, Shivaji lured the Bijapuri army into the dense, mountainous terrain surrounding Pratapgad Fort. On November 10, 1659, the two leaders met in a specially built sanctuary tent at the foot of the fort for peace negotiations. When Afzal Khan feigned an embrace and attempted to stab Shivaji with a hidden dagger, Shivaji responded instantly. Protected by concealed iron chainmail and armed with steel tiger claws (wagh nakh) and a hidden blade (bichwa), Shivaji disemboweled his attacker.
Maratha troops hidden in the Jawli forests executed a synchronized ambush on the disoriented Bijapuri forces, completely routing the enemy army. The Battle of Pratapgad secured the immediate survival of the young Maratha state, demonstrated the devastating efficacy of Maratha guerrilla warfare (ganimi kava), and cemented Shivaji’s reputation as an unyielding leader.
Why it matters
The Battle of Pratapgad was a transformative victory that validated the Maratha strategy of asymmetric guerrilla warfare against established imperial powers. Defeating one of Bijapur's most formidable generals established Chhatrapati Shivaji as a sovereign military force rather than a mere rebel commander. This triumph safeguarded the fledgling Swarajya kingdom that Maharani Saibai had supported during her life, dramatically boosting Maratha morale and laying the foundational momentum for the ultimate expansion of the Maratha Empire across the Indian subcontinent.
Interesting fact
Shivaji anticipated Afzal Khan's treachery based on the general's past assassination of Kasturi Ranga of Ikkeri, leading him to secretly wear concealed chainmail and carry tiger claws (wagh nakh) into the tent.
