Maharani Saibai: The First Queen Consort of the Maratha Empire

Moment 4 of 15

Birth of Saibai's eldest daughter, Sakhubai, strengthening royal ties.

January 1, 1650

Around 1650, Maharani Saibai gave birth to her eldest child, a daughter named Sakhubai, at a crucial juncture in the founding of the Maratha kingdom. Saibai belonged to the influential Nimbalkar dynasty of Phaltan, a prominent Maratha noble house that held considerable feudal power under the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur.

Sakhubai's birth marked the beginning of Shivaji Maharaj and Saibai's domestic legacy during a period of intense military build-up. As was customary among ruling families of the Deccan, marital alliances served as vital diplomatic instruments to unite disparate Maratha Deshmukhs under a unified cause.

Sakhubai was later betrothed and married to Mahadji Nimbalkar, her maternal relative. This strategic union effectively brought the powerful Nimbalkar chieftain into Shivaji’s political orbit, patching past rivalries and securing a crucial regional alliance against the Sultanates and Mughals. The birth of Sakhubai thus reinforced both familial continuity and the diplomatic machinery of the young Maratha state.

Why it matters

Sakhubai's birth represented the first offspring of Shivaji Maharaj and Maharani Saibai, symbolizing the consolidation of familial stability. Her eventual marriage to Mahadji Nimbalkar helped heal rift-ridden relations between the Bhosale and Nimbalkar dynasties, integrating powerful regional warlords into the early Maratha state structures.

Interesting fact

Sakhubai was married to her maternal cousin Mahadji Nimbalkar, a strategic move that successfully transformed a historical rivalry between the Bhosale and Phaltan Nimbalkar families into a strong alliance.
