In 1652, Maharani Saibai gave birth to her second daughter, Ranubai Bhosale, at Rajgad Fort, which was then serving as the central seat of administrative and military power for Shivaji Maharaj's expanding domain. This period coincided with intense efforts to consolidate territorial gains across the Sahyadri mountain range and lay the administrative groundwork for Swarajya.
Ranubai's birth further solidified the domestic hearth of the royal family during a turbulent geopolitical era. In accordance with Maratha matrimonial diplomacy, Ranubai was later married into the noble Jadhavrao family of Sindkhed Raja—the maternal family line of her influential grandmother, Rajmata Jijabai.
This strategic marriage helped mend long-standing political rifts between the Bhosales and the Jadhavraos, who had previously served opposing Sultanates. By aligning the Jadhavraos with Shivaji’s cause, the alliance transformed past clan rivalries into vital political and military support, cementing local stability and strengthening the foundation of the Maratha Empire.
Why it matters
Ranubai’s birth reinforced the royal lineage during the early formative years of Swarajya. Her marriage to Achyutrao Jadhavrao connected Shivaji’s paternal house back to Jijabai's ancestral Jadhav lineage, unifying two powerful ruling dynasties under the Maratha cause.
Interesting fact
Ranubai's marriage to Achyutrao Jadhavrao brought her grandmother Jijabai's maternal clan back into full military alignment with Shivaji Maharaj.
