In 1656, following the military conquest of Javli from the More clan, Shivaji Maharaj designated Rajgad Fort as the primary capital and royal residence of the nascent Maratha kingdom. Maharani Saibai assumed domestic leadership over the royal household at Rajgad, organizing palace administration and managing court daily affairs atop this steep mountain fortress. Operating a royal residence on a high hill fort required sophisticated logistics, supply coordination, and security management.
While Shivaji led campaign operations across the Deccan against the Adilshahi Kingdom and Mughal forces, Saibai maintained stability at court alongside her mother-in-law, Rajmata Jijabai. Saibai oversaw protocol, diplomatic hospitality, and internal fortress governance. Her steady domestic leadership established Rajgad not merely as a military bastion, but as a functioning center of governance. Rajgad served as the Maratha capital for over twenty-five years, making Saibai's foundational household administration central to the early organization of the state.
Why it matters
Establishing Rajgad Fort as the capital provided the young Maratha state with a central defensive seat. Maharani Saibai's administrative oversight transformed the rugged citadel into an operational court, providing stability for the royal family while Shivaji Maharaj conducted regional military campaigns. Her leadership established administrative practices that sustained the capital for more than two decades.
Interesting fact
Rajgad Fort features a prominent flat administrative section known as Padmavati Machi, where Queen Saibai's royal residence and court offices were historically located.
