On May 14, 1657, Maharani Saibai gave birth to her first son, Sambhaji, at the fort of Purandar. The birth of a male heir was celebrated throughout the Maratha territories, as it secured dynastic succession for Shivaji Maharaj's rapidly expanding realm. Sambhaji's arrival reinforced political continuity for the Maratha state, reassuring allied chieftains and military commanders of the state's enduring future.
However, the national celebration was shadowed by personal tragedy. Saibai suffered severe post-natal health complications following Sambhaji's birth. Her health steadily declined over the subsequent two years despite royal medical treatment. Maharani Saibai passed away on September 5, 1659, at Rajgad Fort, shortly before Shivaji's historic battle with Afzal Khan. Her untimely death left the young prince Sambhaji to be raised by his grandmother, Jijabai, while her memory remained deeply revered within Maratha history.
Why it matters
The birth of Sambhaji Maharaj secured the royal lineage of the Maratha dynasty, providing political stability and continuity for the nascent state. As the future second Chhatrapati, Sambhaji went on to lead the empire through critical wars against the Mughals. Maharani Saibai's death shortly after his birth had a profound emotional impact on Shivaji Maharaj and shaped Prince Sambhaji's upbringing under Rajmata Jijabai.
Interesting fact
A dedicated memorial shrine (Samadhi) honoring Maharani Saibai stands at Rajgad Fort on the Padmavati Machi, marking her final resting place.
